EP #40 “What’s in a name?”

If you have been following our fight as a community in this completely unfair world, you would know that we still have not been granted the simple privileges that our hetero counterparts have always had since the dawn of time.

We still can only be legally married in 2 of these United States of America.

Along with getting married comes one of the most basic honors of taking on the name of ones life partner.

But…what do you do if you are gay? What do you do if you can’t just show a “marriage license” to make this change? How do you show validation to the world that you and your partner are joined for life? How do you take your loved ones name?

In this show, we are joined by one of our dear friends, Jeff Fradley (Formerly Jeff Bagwell) who decided that he wanted to take on his partners last name and take a huge step towards becoming his husband.

Jeff will take us through his process of how he legally changed his name to match that of his partner, Steve.

How did Steve feel about this? How did Steve’s family feel about his decision? Why did Jeff take Steve’s name and not vice versa? How hard was it to go through the process? Does it cost anything?

At the end of every show, we do a little thing called a “Roots” question. The purpose of this little reminder is for us all to remember the men and women who walked before us and, sometimes, gave their lives so that we may be the open, proud people we are today.

This show is dedicated to those such peeps! If you’re going out and you happen to see a person a bit older than you, take a minute and spend some time just talking to them, we’ll bet they have some stories to share that will probably bring a tear to your eye.

We’ll read a couple of these stories to you in this episode and share a personal story of a pioneer woman that we both knew back in the day.

As much as we advocate for our younger bruthas and sistas, we can’t forget…MUST remember…..
